Managing School Closure as Someone Who Works for an Essential Organization

Social distance is essential to slowing the spread of COVID-19. At the same time, our communities must support our healthcare and critical infrastructure workers so they can continue working. During this challenging time the Komae app is available for free as a tool to help schedule and manage childcare coverage for our most essential workforces.

The Komae app is a cooperative childcare app that provides an important care management option for healthcare workers, first responders, and those working for essential businesses. Traditionally on Komae, parents swap ‘Komae Points’ as a way to manage and coordinate care for their children within a trusted network. If you’re someone who needs to receive more help than you’re available to offer to others, you are still able to participate, as we are giving free ‘Komae Points’ to anyone who need them. In this way, the app can be used to coordinate the rotation of care days and communicate need within trusted groups.

Getting Started

Step One

Please fill out this form letting us know that you are an essential worker in need of childcare during this difficult time. This form also serves as a waiver, demonstrating that you understand that by receiving sitting services from others outside of your household, you will experience an increased risk for contracting Covid-19.

Next Steps

  • After completion of the form above, our team will be in touch within 24 hours to help connect you to volunteer sitters in your area.
  • In the meantime, we encourage you to create a group in the Komae app with the name of your organization and copy the share link to distribute to your colleagues so that your households can provide care for each other when possible.
  • Send an email to your colleagues letting them know Komae is available for you to use together. Email info@mykomae.com for a template!
  • Contact us with any questions you may have. Consider us your personal resource during this trying time.

Best Practices

  • Buddy Up: As form submissions come in from volunteers and from families in need, our team will help coordinate small isolated hubs of sitters and families, confining sit-swap relationships as much as possible to limit virus spread.
  • You don’t need to have kids to join the Komae group. Anyone willing to help our essential workforces by watching their kids is welcome and encouraged.
  • We encourage distance drop-offs. Rather than walking up to greet the other parents at the door or go into their house, just let the kiddos cross the last 6 feet on their own.

Free Babysitting Hours for Families in Need

On Komae, families give or receive points each time they trade care with each other. In this critical time, if your point balance gets low, don’t worry. Between now and as long as it takes, we will top you up, 10 points (~10 hours) at a time, for free.

If your point balance is less than 10 points (or you are otherwise unable to book the hours you need), drop your name and email on the form below and we’ll add the necessary points to your Komae bank within 24 hours.

Our communities are depending on you, and with fierce gratitude, we hope that in this small way, we can provide support to you in return.
